Cutting Edge provides innovative, industry-connected and flexible education solutions that support students who struggle in mainstream settings, helping them build self-esteem, core skills and a pathway to lifelong success.
Students can achieve up to 60 Stage 2 SACE credits through our Industry Connections projects, designed around real-world skills and capabilities.
We bring learning to life by working with students to design and construct impactful environmental projects. Students gain hands-on experience while contributing to their school community.
Students work alongside industry professionals across disciplines—from engineering and construction to the arts and the maker movement.
For young people struggling with home, life and school demands it is often the schooling that suffers the most. To support and encourage these young people Cutting Edge work across a range of educational services to allow students to learn and grow through hands on Tinkering, Making & Engineering.
We run programs for students in years 10, 11 and 12 who might benefit from alternative pathways to achieving their SACE or are keen to explore vocational skills towards future career pathways. Equally, we can help students in years 8 and 9 to reengage in their education by participating in our programs, developing new skills through group or individual projects, and gain a greater appreciation of a good education. Guided by school and student requirements, we typically run programs over 10 weeks or throughout the year.
While we often deliver our programs in the school environment, we frequently run programs in our Edinburgh workshop, allowing students access to a broader range of resources to build their confidence and skills in a safe space.
Similar to mainstream schools, many of our programs are delivered in the school where we welcome greater input from the teachers and support workers to support the learning journey and align projects to the broader curriculum.
We have been supporting an increasing number of home-schooled students aged 10 years and older. Our workshop and team of educators provides a valuable environment in which these young people can develop new skills through Maker activities, apply their education in a practical environment, and develop new social links with other young who often don’t have access to such programs.
Prior to setting up Cutting Edge Youth Services, Rob had devoted much of his career to working with young people who have struggled with traditional education, schooling or life challenges. Coming from a background as a Fitter and Turner working on custom projects, Rob has developed the programs and resources that apply his creative talents to projects that engage students in practical skills across science, technology, arts, engineering, and mathematics.
Along with a Bachelor of Social Work and Social Planning, Rob is also certified in the areas of Child Protection, Cultural Awareness, Child Safe Environments, and Strategies to Support Individuals with ASD. He has also completed a Cert IV in Training and Assessment.
Phil’s creative talents were recognised very early when he graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts and awarded the University of South Australia Medal, an award presented to graduates with outstanding performance (Top 0.5%). He subsequently completed a BA (Hons) Visual Art with First Class Honors.
Phil’s career has been multi-dimensional, creating and collaborating in several artistic fields, working with students in the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors as well as delivering education for those with special needs or in home schooling. In the last 15 years he has dedicated his career to supporting young people who are disengaged or struggle in the traditional school environments. Having completed a Certificate IV in Youth work, he has worked extensively on researching, developing and delivering practical programs suited to engaging the disengaged in society.

Learning - that's my favourite part of my current job. Helping students discover they have skills, and brains, and learn all the time! School didn't work for them because there's something wrong with school - not because they can't learn. We start with what the young people are interested in. If I don't already have something established, I find it, (Cutting Edge is the answer to what I've been looking for the whole year for my YP who are hands on makers). All of which can be resulted through SACE, and all of which have essential literacy and numeracy skills.
Northern TL Leader in 2024We are looking to get individual students involved in more work experience and try-a-trade days, some of whom have been catalysed by their involvement in Maker’s last term.. Importantly, I want to extend my deepest thanks to you, Phillip and all of the wonderful volunteers we had the privilege of working with. For many of our students, Wednesday Maker’s was the highlight of their week and I know they too are so thankful for the experience.
Adam Whitfield -Edmund Rice Flexi SchoolCutting Edge has been amazing, giving me the opportunity to create things from scratch and being able to meet new people. It has been great, everyone is really easy to get along with and there is always something to do. I have always enjoyed being there.
Maddi -Former Year 12 studentPhil, Rob and their team at Cutting Edge Youth Service have provided a safe, friendly, engaging and supportive space for students to engage in hands on wood working skills working at their own levels to create individualised projects. Through engagement with CEYS, students have built important life skills, independence and developed confidence and their sense of self.
Harry Lambert -Assistant Principal Tailored LearningBased on both available space and the amount of support staff we would recommend somewhere between 7-12 students
Program costs vary depending on both length and level of outcomes required by the school. Costs vary between $6000 to $11000.
For most programs we would recommend a minimum of 5 weeks for a basic engagement program. For programs with more engagement and skill building we would not recommend less than 10 weeks.
Yes both SACE points and other credentials can be achieved with the support and input of the school.
Programs are mostly held at our workshop space within the grounds of the National Military Vehicle Museum. However, for schools that are further away or wish for the program to be held on school grounds this is an option we can work with. Our main requirement in these cases are access to the tech centre and equipment.
Together, we can help students to build confidence, develop real-world skills and see a brighter future.
